In 2018, I’m dipping my toes back into teaching, and I’m starting off with a class that will keep you on track with your publishing goals. I’m calling it: “Finish Your Damn Article”
…because you need to finish your damn article!
This online course will meet four times for two hours.
This is for you if:
1) you already have a piece of writing you want to finish, OR
2) a strong concept and preliminary research for an article you want to write.
Here’s how it will go:
We meet online using Zoom (our virtual classroom). I’ll provide instruction on best practices for excellent writing, as well as overcoming writers block (and fear of inadequacy and all those other horrible things you tell yourself about your writing); you’ll get super-fucking-tactical strategies for getting content on the page and how to massage that content into a lovely shape; and you’ll get feedback from your fellow students to check whether your message is getting through the way you want.
There will be a private FB group to workshop ideas and get real-time feedback from me. The group will vanish once our course is up, so you do not need to worry about having your work/thoughts/ideas permanently floating around in the guts of that system.
Yes, you will read each other’s work!
This is a writing seminar.
Online instruction has become so bite-sized and consumable. Not here. I miss the feeling of sitting in an extremely small course on campus, bonding with students (and watching them bond with each other), and having a substantial exchange of ideas.
So that’s what we’re going to aim for. You will be expected to participate. Read, respond, talk back, share.
And have constant access to my brain while we do it. I plan on being extremely active in our class forums.
What’s the price? $325 for 8 hours of instruction.
Holy cow that’s a lot! Yes, and it cost me nearly $500,000 for my own education. You’re getting a good deal.
If you’re game, the first run starts on Feb 17, we’ll meet on Saturdays at 10am Pacific. If you cannot make a class that’s OK. The recordings will be sent to you. HOWEVER, once you get addicted to the in-class vibe, you might never want to miss a live class. So plan on attending as many as possible.
You will leave the course with:
- a new toolkit of writing strategies that you can apply to anything else you write
- direct feedback on your current piece of writing from me and others
- if you put in the elbow grease, a finished piece you can submit for publication
But I won’t make back my course fee when publishing?
Actually, you can. The last two times I was published I got paid $400, and $350 for a single article. Where are you submitting your work? It IS possible to be a paid professional writer. But not if you never finish an article.
What about a dissertation chapter?
Yes, that counts as an article. Come to class.
What if I don’t use FB?
Then I will find another way to host forums!
What if I don’t want other astrologers/writers/people to get inside access to my brilliant article idea?
If you are paranoid about that, chances are your article is actually not going to get finished and/or is not actually as brilliant as it could be if you workshopped it with others. The first step to becoming a better writer is to stop being precious about your writing.
Will you run this again?
Yes, I will be running this again. However, no one can publish your ideas, they can only publish your writing, so if you’re nearly there, take the leap and let’s get that first piece knocked out. You will be able to apply what you learn here to all future writing. So invest in yourself now and reap the rewards as soon as you can.
See you in class!
There’s an 8 person limit for this run, so
Registration closes on Feb 15.
